The private study was quiet — a sharp contrast to the roar of the stadium crowd outside. Sofie leaned over the desk, trying to collect herself in the dim light of the single lamp.
Click.
The sharp sound of the door lock turning cut through the room. Sofie spun around. Jimmy Donovan stepped inside and closed the distance without hesitation.
"Who gave you permission to be here?"
"No one gives me permission, sweetheart. I own it."
As he kept getting closer, Sofie backed away until the back of her thighs hit the solid edge of the desk. Before she could fall, Jimmy's hands caught her firmly by the wrists.
"Let me go, Donovan. Someone will come."
"Let them."
She tried to pull free. He caught her wrist mid-air. In one fluid motion, he twisted her arm gently behind her back — not hurting, just holding.
"Why..." he whispered, pressing his forehead to hers. "Why do you do this to me?"
For one unguarded second, the dangerous man vanished — and what she saw underneath stopped her cold. He was heartbroken.
"I hate you,"
she whispered — and felt her spine arch into his hand even as she said it.
"Then let's find out exactly where that breaks."
